Lightning and hail storm

(Guest blogger today is Margaret)

We had a tremendous thunderstorm last night! The lightning was totally awesome. Some of the lightning flashes were as thick as a ribbon and some were as thin as yarn. After the lightning that looked like a ribbon, there was really loud thunder. Some lightning strikes were on the hill across from our hill and some were down in the valley between the two hills. When William saw the lightning he counted until there was thunder to know how far away the storm was. Sometimes we would cover our ears if there was a big lightning flash so that we wouldn’t get a headache (but I still got one!)

We saw the storm coming before it hit us. It was a big, big, big storm. The storm looked like an army of warriors advancing on our fortress. And then behind it we could see the clear blue sky that came behind the storm. The storm started out with light rain and then came a big hail storm. The hail was about the size of peas. It hailed for about 5 – 10 minutes and then it started raining again. It was cool because all of the left-over hail collected under the benches at our new house.

The hail hurt William when he stuck out his water bottle to see how much hail he could collect in it. The water in the gutter went down speeding really fast. It looked as wide as the Mississippi River. We could see water sheeting across the middle of the road.

After the storm, the sky was bright blue and shining with white fluffy clouds. And luckily nothing that we know of got hit by the lightning.
