The Boys Go Snowboarding

Guest blogger William

We found snow again, but this time it was in a different place. This time we went to a place called Porter’s Pass, and this time it was not just to play it was to actually ski. Although I may use the word “ski” we actually ended up snowboarding because I was a little paranoid about being impaled on one of the pointy bits you use to ski.
We got up early and let mom sleep in. After we got to Porter’s Pass, we went through all of the paperwork needed to rent snowboards and boots. We’d borrowed some warm clothes and wore layer upon layer of our own clothes to make sure we stayed comfy. The ski boots were very cumbersome, but the employees were very good about measuring them properly. The snowboards they gave us also had to be measured against our height. When all of this was done, we hit the snow.
We decided to experiment on our own for a bit while waiting for our lesson. I thought I was doing pretty well without any instruction. When our instructor arrived, he started us out with some “one-footed” exercises. Then we took the chair lift up to the top of the slope. One thing you have to understand about this ski-lift is that it didn’t have chairs for you to relax on as you went up. They were more like flying fox seats on a retractable rope. At the top we put our other foot in the bindings and started down the slope with our instructor helping us along the way. Ideally in snowboarding you make s-curves down the slope. We all felt that we were doing pretty well by the end of the lesson and we were excited about trying some things on our own.

We still took many wipe-outs, but by the end of the day we were all very satisfied with our progress. My favourite part was being able to streak down the mountain-side. My dad says he’ll stick to proper skiing from now on, but he’s glad he tried this. Ben and I had an awesome time and look forward to doing this again in the States.
