Whangaparaoa

We are now on the lovely peninsula of Whangaparaoa, a name which means “Bay of Whales.” It is a small strip of land located just north of the city of Auckland. The area is a bit more crowded than I had expected, but we’ve been hearing that the big city is expanding and all areas around Auckland are being heavily developed.

After travelling for so many days we decided to not take the car out at all today. We did sleep in, do a bunch of laundry, and walk up to the local town centre/mall. Our walk took us along the beautiful Arkles Bay just one block away. From the bay we could clearly see Rangitoto Island in the distance, as well as several other smaller islands in the Hauraki Gulf (the waters of which fill Auckland Harbour). This part of the North Island geology seems to favour cliff formation, and it’s striking to view this and other bays with steep cliffs dropping right into the water.

The bach we rented is rather large (4 bedrooms/2 baths/dining room/living room/game room in the garage), so the boys are getting one last taste of their own rooms. It should be a comfortable last residence here in NZ.
