This volcanic cone is often compared to Mt. Fuji of Japan because of its dramatic rise from the relatively flat surrounding landscape. We worried that it might be too cloudy to get a good view of the peak, but our approach gave us many different views of the mountain with an assortment of cloud forms around it. We had a limited amount of time, but we definitely wanted to do some sort of tramp, and Mark and I were lobbied heavily for a tramp that would include snow.
Our tramp started at the carpark for a “ski field”. Unlike any skiing area I have ever heard of, this one requires a 30-minute hike just to get to the ski area, *with* your equipment. Of course, if you’re a member of the ski club at this location, you can gain access to the flying fox that carries your gear across the gorge for you. We did reach snow at the end of the tramp, which truly was a ski field, with motorized lifts (you might just be able to make these out in the top picture), and a public shelter (as well as a private lodge) part way up the eastern face of Mt. Taranaki.
Another aside: Here is one of the fun perks to the campground we stayed at last night. It’s called a jumping pillow. The kids loved it!
