Roxx Climbing

The kids had been dying to try out a rock climbing gym that they’d heard about. With less than a week to go in the area, we decided that while dad was being farewelled at work, we’d better use the opportunity to try it out.

The owners of the Roxx Climbing gym have constructed a room that is perfect for novice climbers, particularly children. Housed in a large warehouse building, over 20 different “climbs” can be attempted. The best part is the apparatus, which is called clip ‘n climb. Outfitted with the standard climbing harness, the climbers need only walk up to the wall they are interested in and clip themselves onto a self-belaying rope. As the climbers scale the wall, the rope is pulled into the belaying mechanism and kept taut so that there are no hard falls or landing. Children under 8 years of age have to have their connection checked before taking off up a wall, but that hardly seems to slow them down.
I was amazed and delighted by the variety of hand and foot holds the gym had used. You can see just a few of the different ones in the pictures of the kids. Some other favourites were hand holds that were bits of rope, a couple of walls that were done in the dark with glow-in-the-dark painted handholds, and a stair-step of power poles arranged in a nearly complete circle that they challenged you to do blind folded. All of the kids had a great time, and were not bored for a moment.
