Punting on the Avon
By guest blogger Mark
About a month ago we started a list of many things we hoped to do before leaving Christchurch. As the days ticked by reality sunk in, and anything that we could do somewhere else (e.g., seeing the movie Ice Age 3) got pushed off the list. “Iconic” is the polite word for this classic activity. While seated at water level in a wooden flat-bottomed boat—a punt—tourists can now take in a whimsical history of punting from a punter in braces (suspenders) and a striped vest who navigates them along the river with a 3-meter pole. And we were fortunate to have a break in the weather to squeeze in a half-hour punt in the days before leaving. The kids especially enjoyed the ducks, and the story the punter told about the time he caught his braces on a tree branch and got yanked off the back of his own punt.
